MÈO
2019 / INTERACTION DESIGN / MAKER PROJECT

"Will I ever find love?“
"Will I ever win a jackpot?“
"What should I cook for dinner today?“

The cursed cat goddess Mèo is an oracle that will give an answer to any question. She can shower you with luck but most of the time you won’t like what she sees in your future…

Mèo is a Maker project that uses motion sensors, a Conversational Interface and a hologram LED display to interact with users.

Mèo was built in cooperation with Kanu Pham.

The user can ask Mèo questions to different subjects to which she usually gives a rather negative answer.
Mèo was inspired by fortune teller animatronics that can be found at fairs and carnivals. She plays with the fear humans have of robots and AI, a theme often found in horror and sci-fi, by seemingly opposing humans even as a man-made machine. The visual design concept for Mèo is the contrast between traditional, religious and modern, technical elements.

TECH

Visually Mèo is supported by a hologram LED display that shows images and animations that seem to float in the air by rotating its diodes.

The conversational interface was built with the help of an Amazon Alexa device.
A number of different subjects, such as love, wealth, or health were introduced so that Mèo can properly answer most common questions that might be asked. The answers for each subject are being chosen randomly and in between the negative answers a small chance to receive a positive answer was hidden, making the whole process something similar to a raffle.

STICKER

Lucky users that are blessed and receive a rare positive answer from Mèo additionally receive a sticker that acts as a good luck charm.
